*There is estimated to be over 5,000,000 predators that surf the internet

*These predators are online around the clock looking for targets

*Sexual predators use forums, chat rooms, and instant messaging to locate and communicate with children.

*There is a fifty percent chance that if your child is in a chat room designated for under aged children, the stranger he or she is talking to is a sexual predator logged in under a false identity.

*Sexual predators especially enjoy the use of private messaging, private chat rooms, and the webcam to make advances towards their victims.

*Surveys show that one in five of our kids will receive sexual advances while online but that less than 25 per cent of them will inform a parent or adult.

*Approximately 5 percent of our kids were aggressively approached by a sexual predator. This means they asked to meet the child offline, called them on the phone, or sent them money or gifts in the mail.

*89 percent of all sexual advances towards our children take place in internet chat rooms and through instant messaging.

*75 percent of our kids are willing to share personal information with a stranger on the internet, exactly what the sexual predator is looking for.

*77 percent of the targets of online predators were 14 or older. 22 percent were between the ages of 10 and 13.

*30 percent of those that are victimized by sexual predators are boys.

*Sexual predators are usually between the ages of 18 and 55. They are predominately males. Many have no prior criminal record.

*64 percent of the teens surveyed admitted they did things online that they would not want their parents to know about.

*Approximately 19 percent of our teens say they have considered meeting someone offline that they have only known online.

*Approximately 9 percent of our teens state that they have actually met offline a stranger they previously only knew and met online.

The internet predator has three favorite tools they love to use to target their victims:

*Online chat rooms that offer private messages or private rooms that they can isolate your child and become aggressive without being observed by others.

*Internet messaging, again, because they can get your child one-on-one and try and take advantage of them.

*The webcam is one of the favorite tools of the predator to find out what your child looks like, to try and gain personal information about them, and to manipulate them into doing things on camera to compromise their safety.

In the scientific community, for a clinical study to hold any weight, it must be a peer reviewed study, meaning that it must be examined and reviewed by other experts in the same field. However, it is apparent that the Sensa study is not peer reviewed, although Dr. Hirsch claims otherwise.

What's more revealing is that the Endocrine Society went on to say that "they were surprised and troubled by the promotional nature of his presentation". Obviously, the Sensa presentation Dr. Hirsch made was more promotional than anything else. Dr. Pamela Peeke who also appeared on the ABC News segment said that: "There's no magic bullet, and there's no magic sprinkle."

So is Sensa really a weight loss scam?

That's not really for us to decide, so we'll let the users of Sensa to decide for themselves. The Sensa diet aid has appeared on numerous news reports, with some reporting users having positive weight loss results so far. However, I still remain skeptical about its effectiveness, and at a cost of USD for a one month supply, it is definitely not cheap. What did people do with their time 20 years ago? How did we ever manage without personal computers, the Internet, cell phones, iPods and 24 hour cable news? The technological landscape is vastly different these days and scientist are wondering just what that means for our brains.

According to research done last year by UCLA scientist Dr. Gary Small, daily doses of technology may be altering the way the brain functions, particularly in social skills. He suggests that all that screen time may weaken the brain circuits involved in face-to-face interactions. He is concerned that fundamental social skills like reading facial expressions during a conversation are being compromised.

Small is particularly concerned about what he calls the digital native, those in their twenties and younger who have been "digitally hard-wired since toddlerhood." As he explained in an Associated Press article, the digital native runs the risk of being socially awkward and isolated by their inability to interpret non-verbal messages from people. He is afraid this may be particularly true in the classroom that still relies on traditional verbal instruction along with interaction with the teacher and other students.

Small argues his case in his book "iBrain: Surviving the Technological Altercation of the Modern Mind." He admits that his research about whether or not all this technology is changing brain circuitry is new and ongoing.

A MacArthur Foundation study found that teens feel very connected to each other through online social networking. The study allayed some parents' fears that teenagers are vulnerable to online predators the more time they spend socially on the Internet. Parents who are too protective and prohibit computer use for their teens may be keeping their kids out of the broader social loop. The study found that teenagers move between the online social world and the face-to-face interactions with relative ease, one building on the other.

Dr. Maryanne Wolf of Tufts University thinks technology may even affect how people learn to read. Technology requires users to gather information quickly, rather than the more methodical and sophisticated methods of comprehending regular reading material. She is studying if this rapid information gathering could be changing the normal brain pathways formed when reading. She is particularly curious about the affect on young children as technology becomes a more integral component of modern classrooms.

As with any new information technology, like 50 years ago with the inclusion of television to the average American home, there will be curiosity and controversy. It is certainly hard to imagine how our brains waited for the morning paper or the evening news to hear what was going on in the world around us. It seems like each generation has a quicker learning curve when it comes to the latest technology. That could just be human nature, or it could be the circuitry of the brain changing and adapting to the technologically saturated world in which we live.

It seems at first sight that we must sacrifice the tactile feel of pen and paper in our hands in the name of increasing efficiency, speed, ease of use, not to mention a swift reply from our online pals. But, must the creativity and romance of the old-fashioned way of doing things really be lost in the world of pen pals and online friends?

Here is a suggestion to get the best of both worlds. Get to know your pen pals online initially, then once you have established relationships with a number of pen pals, query them to see if any of them would be interested in the occasional exchange of snail mail letters. No doubt, with a little luck, you'll find a kindred spirit, or at least persuade one of them of the advantages of putting pen to paper.
